The President of the AMBM, Ivan Normandeau, issued the following statement on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the death of Métis leader, Louis Riel :

Today marks the 135th anniversary of the hanging of Louis Riel, Métis leader and the first Premier of Manitoba.

Riel advocated for minority rights and a bilingual constitution when he negotiated with Canada for Manitoba’s fair entry into Confederation.

Manitoba was to be a province where the rights of all Manitobans were respected and represented.

In 2020, I am confident that the AMBM upholds this vision by advocating for bilingual recognition and by promoting the values of hospitality and inclusiveness in the projects we hold dear.

Today, we stand with our Métis communities as we commemorate the life and achievements of Louis Riel.
