Rural Municipality of Piney
Located less than nine kilometers from the American border, in the southeast of Manitoba, the Rural Municipality of Piney spans over 600,000 acres. This territory is composed of lush fields, dense forests, rich in captivating history, and warm communities.
The birth of Piney
Founded in the late 1870s by Icelandic immigrants, Piney thrived on agriculture, the main activity of these pioneers. The arrival of the railway in 1906 diversified income sources, thus stimulating the economic development of the region. The municipal office of the Rural Municipality (RM) of Piney, once located in the heart of the town until 1970, and the old CN station are preserved witnesses of this bygone era.
Diverse recreational activities
In terms of outdoor activities and recreation, Piney offers a varied event calendar throughout the year. Residents and visitors can enjoy a snowmobile tournament in January, a mixed curling tournament in February, an ATV tournament in September, a community supper in October, a tea in honor of Mother’s Day, and a craft market for the Christmas period.
Economic development
Economically, Piney is home to the Hutterite colony of Pineland, where agriculture continues to play a predominant role in the local economy. The municipality is also proud to host the Pinecreek border airport, whose unique runway has the distinction of crossing the international border, thus symbolizing the close ties between Canada and the United States. Piney remains a remarkable example of the cultural richness and economic vitality of small Canadian municipalities.
