The President of the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM) and Reeve of the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie, Mr. Ivan Normandeau, issued the following statement regarding the passing of Mr. Jason Schreyer:

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Mr. Jason Schreyer, City Councillor for Elmwood-East Kildonan in Winnipeg.

Jason Schreyer stood out as more than just a dedicated municipal official; he was an indispensable member of our extended bilingual municipal network. Serving on the Boards of Directors of the AMBM and its subsidiary, the Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (Conseil de développement économique des municipalités bilingues du Manitoba, CDEM), he made significant contributions by actively engaging in meetings, posing insightful questions, fostering thoughtful discussions, and steadfastly championing initiatives that advanced the development of our communities.

Jason Schreyer firmly believed in the importance of bilingualism and the tangible benefits it brings to strengthening our communities. As a proud member of Manitoba’s Francophone community, he demonstrated impeccable bilingual proficiency and carried this identity with both dedication and pride. He made it his mission to involve his son in Francophone events, ensuring that the heritage he had received was passed on to the next generation.

Jason was the son of the Honourable Ed Schreyer, a distinguished former Premier of Manitoba and Governor General of Canada, renowned for his dedication to promoting the French heritage in the province’s modern history. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jason upheld this legacy, serving as a steadfast advocate and prominent ally of the Francophonie.

He exemplified the essence of public service, demonstrating unwavering commitment to engaging with individuals from all walks of life and actively contributing to the enrichment of both municipal and Francophone public spheres. His legacy as a dedicated and respected community leader remains indelible. He was one of us.

On behalf of Manitoba’s bilingual municipalities, the AMBM extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Jason Schreyer. His remarkable contributions and enduring legacy will remain cherished in our collective memory.

The AMBM is the voice of bilingual municipal leadership in the province of Manitoba. It represents 16 municipal governments committed to offering services in both official languages to their residents. Together, these municipalities represent the majority of Manitoba’s population. Manitoba’s bilingual municipal leadership also leads the AMBM Group, a consortium of three organizations with complementary mandates: the AMBM, the Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (Conseil de développement économique des municipalités bilingues du Manitoba, or CDEM) and Eco-West Canada (EWC), which specializes in the green economy. Complementing each other, these three organizations actively contribute to the development, vitality and sustainability of the province’s Official Language Minority Communities (OLMC) and the province as a whole.
