AMBM President Ivan Normandeau issued the following statement on the occasion of Earth Day, April 22, 2021:

On Earth Day, Manitoba’s bilingual municipal leadership joins more than one billion people in 193 countries in this international movement for a greener planet.

We recognize that municipalities own 60% of the critical infrastructure that supports our economy.

That’s why, since 2008, the AMBM and its members have been actively engaged in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the creation of our subsidiary Eco-West Canada (EWC).

Small and medium-sized municipalities have access to a wide range of new and advanced environmental technologies. However, they rarely have the capacity and resources to acquire them and undertake the transition to a healthier and more sustainable management of their infrastructures.

With a shared commitment to investing in a greener economy, all three levels of government have an interest in working together to meet this challenge through the turnkey approach offered by EWC.

By supporting municipalities in Manitoba and Western Canada in their transition to clean technologies and building their capacity to implement them, EWC will also contribute to the Province of Manitoba’s and Canada’s environmental targets.

Something can be done today. Let’s look forward to a strong tripartite municipal-provincial-federal partnership for the environment and for the benefit of future generations!
