AMBM Vice-President Justin Bohémier issued the following statement in support of Laurent Tétrault’s candidacy for the position of First Vice-President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM):

Manitoba’s bilingual municipal leadership (AMBM) fully endorses the candidacy of Councillor Laurent Tétrault (Rural Municipality of La Broquerie, Manitoba) for the position of First Vice-President of FCM.

A seasoned politician, proud Métis and Franco-Manitoban, Mr. Tétrault has 45 years of experience and expertise in the municipal field and the ability to speak out for Canadian municipalities in both official languages.

Recognized as a builder, Laurent understands the strategic importance of rural communities to our country and the issues they face. His personal and professional experiences have also led him to develop an in-depth knowledge of official language communities and the linguistic duality that characterizes our country.

Laurent is a man of action. He is not afraid to set ambitious goals and to give himself the means to achieve them. Thanks to his unifying and diplomatic leadership, he has been able to advance several important municipal files and bring them to a successful conclusion. As such, he has always been a great ally of the AMBM and its subsidiary, the Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (CDEM), where he served as a member of the governance committee for several years.

A man of conviction, Laurent is running for First Vice-President of FCM with the goal of making Canada a better place to live, work and play. Above all, Laurent wants to put in place mechanisms and tools to ensure a prosperous future for Canadian communities, particularly in rural and remote areas. There is no doubt that Laurent will work hard to achieve these goals and succeed.

Mr. Tétrault has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for several years. He was also Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Municipal Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs. We believe that his commitment to this national network is reflected in his appointment as FCM’s First Vice-President.

As we enter a bold and ambitious economic recovery across Canada, strong and concerted municipal leadership will be necessary and crucial. In the context of FCM, we believe that Laurent Tétrault will rise to this challenge.

The AMBM is the voice of bilingual municipal leadership in the province of Manitoba. It represents 15 local governments committed to providing services in both official languages to their citizens.

Manitoba’s bilingual municipal leadership is also at the helm of the AMBM Group, a consortium of three complementary organizations: the AMBM, the Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (CDEM) and Eco-West Canada (EWC), which has specialized in the green economy since 2008. Complementary, these three organizations actively contribute to the development, vitality and sustainability of the province’s Official Language Minority Communities (OLMCs), including the French-speaking Métis.
