The President of the AMBM and Reeve of the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie, Mr. Ivan Normandeau, and the Reeve of the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry, Mr. Darrel Curé, issued the following joint statement as part of the announcement of funding for the renovation of the Saint-Malo arena thanks to the financial support of the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program (GICBP):

Yesterday (June 6th), the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for PrairiesCan and CanNor, officially announced over $3.7 million in funding from Infrastructure Canada, in collaboration with the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry, which has been a member of the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM) for several decades.

Thanks to the financial support of Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program (GICBP), the municipality will now be able to proceed with the major renovation of the De Salaberry Recreation Facility (Saint-Malo). The project aims to modernize and expand the existing recreation centre to include multi-purpose spaces, so that the municipality can offer more recreation programs in both official languages to the local and surrounding community.

The AMBM and the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry applaud the federal government’s commitment to Manitoba’s bilingual municipalities, and warmly thank Ministers Dominique Leblanc and Dan Vandal, who have been great allies along the way.

The GICBP supports the construction of community buildings and improvements to existing ones, in particular in areas with populations experiencing greater needs, while also making the building more energy efficient, lower carbon, more resilient and higher performing.

This support from the federal government is directly in line with the Economic Recovery Strategy for Manitoba’s Bilingual Municipalities (2021-2024), which calls for investments of $222.4 million in priority sustainable development infrastructure projects in our communities.

This funding also echoes the 2022-2025 Strategy to Support Economic Immigration to Manitoba’s Bilingual Municipalities in its contribution to building more welcoming communities, as well as the new Municipal Maturity Model (3M) surrounding the delivery of municipal services in both official languages.

It’s also important to highlight the provincial government’s financial contribution to the project as a whole under the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community (ACSC) Fund and the Building Sustainable Communities Program (BSCP).

Ultimately, all three orders of government are joining forces in a tripartite partnership to support the renovation of the De Salaberry Recreation Facility, for the benefit of the local Francophone and bilingual communities.

The AMBM and its member municipal governments are enthusiastic about continuing the work begun with Infrastructure Canada to accelerate the transition of Manitoba’s Francophone and bilingual communities to an eco-responsible economy, so that they can participate effectively in achieving the vision of an ever greener and more sustainable Canada.
